Title: Weather Diary 1 February 1951
Concept: Ice storms are perhaps the worst of all winter weather types
Detail: 1 February 1951: According to records, this may have been the most severe ice storm in the history of the nation to that date. Freezing rain coated Tennessee and surrounding states with a massive sheet of ice which resulted in at least 25 deaths and well over $100 million in damages (1951 dollars). On the same date Taylor Park, Colorado tumbled to -60, the coldest temperature ever recorded in that state. Ice storms of this severity, while relatively infrequent, can cause almost unprecedented disruptions in transportation and industry for weeks over a wide region.
