Title: How to Receive Tornado Warnings
Concept: From smart phones to NOAA Weather Radio ...there is no reason to be uniformed
Detail: A tornado watch (issued by the Storm Prediction Center) means there is a possibility of one or more tornadoes in your area as the day wears on, but that nothing as yet is threatening. A tornado warning, issued by your local NWS office, means a tornado has been sighted or it's presence is indicated by NEXRAD radar and very well may be approaching your area. A tornado warning means consider taking shelter immediately. How are these warnings best received? Many now use alerts sent directly to their smart phone or via text or email. Radio and television stations receive tornado warnings from the NWS over special communication circuits. They, by law, must rebroadcast these on an emergency basis within seconds of their receipt. NOAA Weather Radio is a government operated, VHF system which now serves over 90% of the population throughout the United States, The National Weather Service forecasters broadcast tornado warnings on NOAA Radio within one or two minutes of a confirmed report. These radio receivers, which generally cost less than $50, come equipped with a tone alert system. This means whenever a severe weather warning is in effect for your general area, the tone alert will buzz indicating you should check NOAA Weather Radio immediately. Some communities activate sirens when a tornado is approaching. But sometimes, you have to provide your own warning. If you know there is a watch in effect, and the skies have grown dark with threatening thunder storm clouds...be especially alert. A rapidly rotating cloud descending slowly towards the ground means trouble. In the dark of the night, or within a heavy rain storm, you may not be able to see an approaching funnel. But loud roaring noises mean that a tornado is within tens of seconds of striking. Tornadoes have been described variously as sounding like a hundred jet planes coming or a fast moving freight train. If you hear such a noise during a thunderstorm overhead or in the immediate vicinity, prepare to spring into immediate action.
