Title: Do You Have a Designated Tornado Shelter?
Concept: Emergency response planning should be completed long before the emergency!
Detail: A critical question is, do you have a designated tornado shelter and in each location you frequent—your home, school, factory, or office building? This must be done before hand — not when the tornado is bearing down. If the building operator or management has not posted tornado shelter signs, perhaps you should ask them to do so. Just as every family should practice fire drills, they should also practice tornado drills at home. As a general rule, go to the interior of the building on the lowest floor possible. Avoid those portions of the building which have large free span roofs that could collapse if the walls were weakened. Many school gymnasiums and supermarkets are highly dangerous places to be during a tornado. Wherever you seek shelter, be sure that glass blowing in from windows would not strike you. Always get under something heavy that could protect you from falling or flying debris. Always protect your head.
