Title: Weather Diary 21 March 1932
Concept: The interiors of the Gulf States are prone to severe tornado outbreaks.
Detail: There are stars falling in Alabama, as the old song goes, but on this date in 1932, Chicken Little could have justifiably been screaming that the sky was falling. A series of seven tornadoes swept across Alabama taking 268 lives and injuring 1,874, with millions lost in property damage. Such death tolls today are hopefully unlikely due to our improved capability in detecting tornadoes and warning the public. But apathy could still strike a terrible blow if the public lets down its guard against deadly killer tornadoes. And again in 2011, an outbreak on the same awful scale showed this was not a freak storm.
