Title: Weather Diary 1 April 1960
Concept: Satellites have provided global observations critical to weather and climate science.
Detail: 1 April 1960): Meteorology entered the space age as TIROS 1 was successfully launched from (then) Cape Canaveral. The Television and Infrared Observation Satellite was the first in a long series of increasingly sophisticated polar orbiting satellites. TIROS 1 sent back crude (by today's standards) black and white TV images. But for the first time, it was possible to see entire storm systems and fronts portrayed in clouds. Since TIROS 1, every hurricane and typhoon has been spotted and tracked from space.
