Title: What Conventional Radar Doesn't Detect
Concept: Or....why you need a Doppler radar for severe weather monitoring.
Detail: A standard radar can not detect precipitation-free clouds, wind, nor tornadoes (unless they have a vast amount of debris flying around in them.) Thus, since the 1990s, most radars in use have the added feature of measuring the Doppler shift in the returned signal. This allows one, if the target is sufficient to return a detectable signal, to determine the velocity along (away or towards) the radar beam. Since only one component of the velocity is detected, it takes some tricky processing and analysis to determine whether there is a rotating target, i.e., a tornado, within range. For this reason most TV weathercasts do not show the actual Doppler display but a summary of the information determined by the system. There are also radars which can map clouds, but these use shorter wavelengths and will not do a good job in mapping precipitation.
