Title: Hurricane Seen on Radar
Concept: The WSR-57 radar display, circa 1965.
Detail: For the first 40 years of the radar meteorology era, radar operators had crude black and white displays, with no animation. Archival was done via 16 mm film using cameras focused on repeater scopes. The displays for separate radars were not combined into mosaics as they are today. This black and white PPI (plan position indicator) scope shows a hurricane approaching the coast of Florida as seen by the Miami WSR-57 radar. Note the rain free eye. The various grey levels within the spiraling bands relate to the precipitation intensity as measured by an electronic circuit. This photograph was taken from the scope photography films routinely made at primary National Weather Service radar sites.
