|Title: Weather Diary 30 May 1876|
Concept: Flash flood.
Detail: As we move into summer, the tornado season wanes, although
very slowly - but the flash flood season continues to grow as summertime
thunderstorms rumble across the landscape. In 1976 on this date, a major
flood struck Tulsa, OK as 10 inches of rain deluged the area. Over
2,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, with 12 million dollars in losses.
There was only one drowning victim. However, flash floods, which can
occur any place in the U.S. during the summer months, have the potential
for taking scores if not hundreds of lives. The flash flood may in fact
be the number one environmental hazard followed closely by
lightning, hurricanes and tornadoes.
