Title: Weather Diary 6 June 1944
Concept: The D-Day Forecast.
Detail: It is often called "the weather forecast that helped win a war." Allied troops were positioned off the beaches of Normandy for the D-Day Invasion of Europe, led by General Eisenhower. A vicious storm had raked the area the day before making military operations all but impossible. They needed good weather for the invasion to succeed. The forecasters applied every tool and technology that the new science of meteorology had available, and predicted that the weather would not hamper the invasion. At 5:45 AM the Normandy beachhead was mostly clear. Overcast middle level clouds developed later in the day, but the liberation of Europe was finally underway!
