Title: Weather Diary 4 July 1956
Concept: Cloudburst!
Detail: Perhaps it was all those fireworks that upset the atmosphere - but the most intense rainfall in a 60 second period recorded any-where in the entire world was measured on Independence Day 1956, in Unionville, MD. A full 1.23 inches of rain descended in that one minute. If it had continued to rain at that rate for three hours, 221 inches of rain, or nearly 19 feet would have fallen. Fortunately the storm had sense enough to stop shortly thereafter. This event gives graphic evidence of the incredibly high rainfall rates that can occur within summer thunderstorms, and makes it easy to understand the origin of the flash flood problem.
