Title: Weather Diary 16 July 1945
Concept: Atomic bombs and the weather?
Detail: Alamagordo, NM: At dawn on 16 August 1945 the atomic age began with the explosion of the first atomic bomb. Clear skies and light winds were the desired weather conditions for this first ever nuclear blast, though it rain most of the night before, almost cancelling the test. However, for a decade or two thereafter, almost every bizarre weather and climatological event was blamed on our atomic bomb testing. One wonders if the termination of open air testing by most nations of the world then resulted in the totally screwy weather of the following decades? We certainly learned one thing about the atmospheric behavior from atomic bomb tests; a cloud of radioactive debris ejected into the stratosphere can circle the globe many times before dissipating to non-detectable levels.
