Title: Weather Diary 31 July 1976
Concept: Big Thompson Flash Flood.
Detail: The Big Thompson Canyon, CO flash flood: while Colorado in the summertime is one of the truly beautiful places in the US, it too has environmental hazards that must be reckoned with. A massive thunderstorm, towering over 60,000 ft poured over 10 inches of rain into the head waters of the Big Thompson River high in the Rockies. The resulting flash floods sent a 20 ft wall of water smashing down the canyon, along which US Route 34 travels. With little warning, over 150 people perished. Today this road is marked very clearly with signs directing motorists and hikers: in the event of a flash flood, leave the valley flood and climb up the cliffs. How many of the motorists, residents, and campers on the beautiful Big Thompson Canyon could have lived had they had a few moments warning and moved only a hundred feet up the surrounding hillside?
