Title: Weather Diary 24 August 1960
Concept: The coldest place on Earth.
Detail: For once, a Soviet Union claim of having "the greatest" was validated. While we will disallow their supposed inventions of the hot dog and baseball (they did claim that back during the Cold War), the Soviet Antarctic weather station at Vostok did in fact measure what for years was the coldest surface temperature ever at ground level on this planet, -127F. During the darkness of the Antarctic winters, temperatures are frequently less than -100F. This record was subsequently broken in July, 1983 as it reached -128.6F, which probably panicked even more penguins. This is without the wind chill! But it was a great COLD War victory for Mother Russia.
