Title: Weather Diary 3 September 1970 Answer 003
Concept: Long the Record Hailstone....1.93 pounds at Vivian, SD beat it out in 2010.
Detail: While hail stones are a feature of violent spring thunderstorms, a September thunderthumper produced the largest (at the time) documented single hail stone in the history of the United States. A gigantic chunk of ice whistled to the ground in Coffeyville, KS. It was 5 and one-half inches in diameter, measured 17.5 inches in circumference and weighed 1.67 lbs. Since then even larger hail have been recorded in Aurora, NE and then Vivian, SD, on 23 July 2010. That stone measured 8.0 inches in diameter, 18.6 inches in circumference, and weighed in at 1.93 pounds. The world's record may be 2.25 lbs, in the Gopalganj district, Bangladesh on 14 April 1986.
