Title: Weather Diary 6 September 1881
Concept: Deadly Forest Fires.
Detail: Fall is the beautiful time of year, with warm, dry days making the outdoors very pleasant - and the threat of forest fires very high over much of the United States. The upper Midwest and Great Lake states have a history of severe forest fires. Tremendous fires over Michigan in 1881 sent huge of clouds of yellow smoke bellowing across the nation, coloring the skies as far, away as New England. Twenty entire towns and villages were burned to the ground, while 500 people perished and millions of dollars in property damage were recorded near Lake Huron. Even with today's modern fire fighting techniques, hot dry autumn winds can cause brush fire outbreaks with potentially serious consequences if quick action is not taken.
