Title: Weather Diary 15 September 1928
Concept: San Phillipe Hurricane.
Detail: It was called the San Phil1ipe hurricane. It caused tremendous devastation in the Caribbean. On this date in 1928 it was less than 24 hours before landfall near Palm Beach, FL. No one knew it was coming and yet within the next 48 hours - devastation. Enormous damage and floods hit southern Florida. A huge swell of water swept across Lake Okeechobee, drowning over 1,800 people, with about an equal number injured. The barometer was reported as low as 27.43 inches. Such a storm today might not result in such a heavy loss of human lives, but property and agricultural losses would be in the tens of billion dollar class.
