Title: Weather Diary 8 November 1970
Concept: First Official Storm Warning.
Detail: In this day and age when literally thousands of weather forecasts and warnings are prepared each day, it is interesting to note that perhaps the first storm warning, as we know them today, was issued by Professor Increase Latham in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was working with the U.S. Signal Corps, the Government Agency which eventually grew into the current National Weather Service. His ability to collect weather opbservations from around the country using the still new telegraphic communications system, enabled him to foresee a storm brewing which would potentially have a severe impact on Great Lakes shipping. If one of the characteristics of science is the ability to predict the future, then perhaps meteorology became a science on this date.
