|Title: Weather Diary 15 December 50|
Concept: Wet Year!
Detail: It rained at Puu KuKui, Hawaii on this date in 1950.
Hardly surprising - a full 578 inches of rain fell that year. Portions of
the Hawaiian islands, which are giant volcanic peaks exposed to the moist
tropical trade winds, are in fact some of the wettest places on this earth.
Yet only 10 or 15 miles away, nearly desert conditions exist in the range
shadow" of the mountain. 578" of rain, incidentally, is about 20 years worth
of average rainfall in many midwestern cities.
