|Title: Weather Diary 20 December 1836|
Concept: The Sudden Change.
Detail: Imagine the early settlers in Illinois country when on
this day when they came in from the fields at noon under relatively balmy conditions (40F) and, without any forecast available, by dinner time the temperature had plummeted to zero
or less!. The local legends claim that chickens were "frozen in their tracks."
While that was unlikely, it appears that the new settlers were taught a bitter
lesson about the vicious vagaries of a continental climate, in which air
masses can change from tropical to arctic in a matter of hours.
